GIR's Dog Suit Pattern

Invader Zim was such a weird, important part of my childhood. I used to stay up super late watching it and other creepy shows (like Pinky and the Brain and Aaah! Real Monsters). The best part of Invader Zim (in my humble opinion) was GIR. In high school, you could find me quoting him frequently, much to all my friends dismay. I have decorated a lot of my things with drawings of GIR in his dog suit throughout the years, so of course I had to make him!

I actually came up with this pattern because I got a recommendation for a free GIR amigurumi pattern on my Pinterest, unfortunately the link led nowhere and the pattern doesn't exist anymore! Whaaaaat?! Well, it took me many hours of staring at our creepy-cute friend and frogging his head about a million times, but I made a pattern that I'm satisfied with!

Materials:

3.75mm crochet hook

Worsted weight yarn in green , black, and white

Small safety eyes

Fiber fill

Stitch markers

Yarn needle

Abbreviations:

mr- magic ring

st- stitch

sc- single crochet

dc- double crochet

inc- increase

dec- decrease

sk- skip

hdc- half double crochet

Head:

Round 1: mr 4 [4]

Round 2: inc x4 [8]

Round 3: inc x8 [16]

Round 4: (inc 2, sc 2)x4 [24]

Round 5: sc 2 (inc 2, sc 4)x3, inc 2, sc 2 [32]

Round 6: sc 3 (inc 2, sc 6)x3, inc 2, sc 3 [40]

Round 7: sc 4 (inc 2, sc 8)x3, inc 2, sc 4 [48]

Round 8: Back Loops Only, sc around [48]

Rounds 9-20: sc around [48]

Round 21: Back Loops Only (sc 8, dec 2)x4 [40]

Round 22: (sc 6, dec 2)x4 [32]

Round 23: (sc 4, dec 2)x4 [24]

Round 24: (sc 2, dec 2)x4 [16]

Round 25: dec x8 [8]

Round 26: dec x4 [4]

Fasten off, weave in ends.

*Don’t stuff too much, or else the head won’t be as cube-like as we’re going for!

Body:

Round 1: mr 6 [6]

Round 2: inc x6 [12]

Round 3: (sc 1, inc)x6 [18]

Round 4: (sc 2, inc)x6 [24]

Round 5: (sc 3, inc)x6 [30]

Rounds 6-11: sc around [30]

Round 12: (sc 3, dec)x6 [24]

Rounds 13-15: sc around [24]

Round 16: (sc 2, dec)x6 [18]

Fasten off, attach to head, more towards the middle of an edge.

Arms (x2):

Round 1: mr 6 [6]

Rounds 2-7: sc around [6]

Round 8: pinch opening in half, sc across [3]

fasten off, attach to sides of body

Legs (x2):

Round 1: mr 8 [8]

Rounds 2-4: sc around [8]

Fasten off, attach to bottom of body.

Eyes (x2):

Round 1: mr 6 [6]

Round 2: inc x6 [12]

Round 3: (sc 1, inc)x6 [18]

Rounds 4-5: sc around [18]

Fasten off, attach to front of head after adding safety eyes. You'll want to position the eyes so that the bottom just lines up with the last "back loop only" row. They should be roughly 3 st apart. Only sew down the back loops. If you want them to bulge a little bit more, pull the yarn tight before you tie a knot and you'll start to see them bulge the tighter you pull it!

Zipper:

ch 10

Row 1: starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc 9, ch 1, turn [9]

Row 2: sc 9 [9]

Fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing. attach to front of body, in the very center. Embroider zig-zag on top of zipper.

Zipper Pull:

ch 3 (leave a long beginning tail for sewing)

Row 1: starting in second ch from hook, sc 2, ch 1, turn [2]

Row 2: sc 1, inc, ch 1, turn [3]

Row 3: sc 1, ch 2, sk 1 st, sc 1, ch 1, turn[4]

Row 4: sc across, placing 2 sc in ch 2 space.

Fasten off, weave in end, attach to top of zipper

Ears (x2):

ch 11

Starting in 3rd ch from hook, dc x2, hdc x2, sc x2, ss x3 [9]

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Attach to top of the head.

Tongue:

ch 3 (leave a long beginning tail for sewing)

Row 1: starting in second ch from hook, sc 2, ch 1, turn [2]

Row 2: sc 1, inc, ch 1, turn [3]

Row 3: sc 3 [3]

Fo, weave in end, attach to face.

Tail:

ch 4 (leave a long beginning tail for sewing)

Row 1: starting in second ch from hook, sc 3, ch 1, turn [3]

Row 2: sc 1, dec, ch 1, turn [2]

Row 3: sc 2, ch 1, turn [2]

Row 4: dec [1]

Fasten off, weave in end, attach to lower middle back of body.

For the stitching, I find the easiest way to do it is mark a relatively straight line up the back, top of head, and face with pins, and then use a backstitch with about a st of space in between each backstitch. When you get to the face keep backstitching, but end just above the last "back loop only" round. This is where I added the nose. I just made a horizontal backstitch back and forth between the eyes and then continued the backstitch onto the chin and then fastened off.

And now you should be all done with GIR!!!!
