This pattern is an updated version of the old Kenny the mini Koala pattern, now with less sewing and better instructions. This is a relatively beginner-friendly amigurumi pattern that works up really quickly!

***You can purchase an INEXPENSIVE AD-FREE PDF of this pattern on Etsy! The pattern is concise, downloadable, and printable, and your purchase helps me to continue putting out free patterns!***

It has been such a joy seeing all of your Koalas come to life since I put the original Kenny the mini Koala pattern out in 2018! Seeing people use this pattern to make plushies as gifts and to sell as part of fundraisers for Australian wildfire recovery has made my heart so very happy. I cannot express how happy I get every time I see someone tag me in a photo of their Kenny the Koala photos.

There have been two things that people have asked for that I am finally fixing, beyond making a version with less sewing! One, is that you all would like more photos, so with this update, I have taken as many pictures as I could along the process without it being an overwhelming amount of photos. And two, is that a lot of people have requested a downloadable pdf, which is now avalable for a small fee on etsy.

This pattern is pretty beginner-friendly and requires a bit less sewing than its original version, so grab your hooks and let's get crocheting!

Assembly:

Now that you have all your pieces, it's time to put them all together!

  • Begin by attaching the ear pieces together. Fold or pinch the ear in half so that it is a curved shape. Then pin the white portion of the ear, and sew it down. Only sew through one layer of the ear.

  • Pin the ears onto the head until they’re in a position you like, and then sew them down. This is the trickiest part, so make sure you take your time and use as many pins as you need! When it’s time for me to sew the inner ear, I like to place a pin every few stitches and then flip the ear kind of inside out so that I can more easily access the stitches that I need to sew down.

  • Pin the feet into a sitting position and then sew them down. This position can vary based on tension and amount of stuffing, so I like to just move the pinned feet until they can hold my Koala up!

  • The last thing to do is sew down or embroider the nose and tummy patch. The nose generally fits between rows 9 and 12, a couple stitches away from either eye. For the tummy patch, place it between rows 18 and 21, as centered as possible.

  • After that, your cute little koala is all finished and ready to accompany you on all your adventures in the outback!
